Officers in Lagos have launched investigations today as they gave details of how two machine operators and a fun seeker died, while 11 passengers were rescued and two others missing after a boat mishap in the state.

According to the police, a 50-year-old man fell into a Melting Pot and died while operating a machine.

Identified as Sunday Usen Obong and staff of Landcraft Industry Nig. Ltd at Odogunyan Industrial Estate, in Ikorodu, the man fell inside a melting pot, while operating the company’s machine at about 3:30 pm on November 22.

Lagos State police spokesman, DSP Bala Elkana told NewsmakersNG: “Consequently, the victim died on the spot. Homicide detectives have visited the scene. The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”

In a similar development, a 35-year-old moulding machine operator got trapped and died at Multipak Nig. Ltd, Plot F28, Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun.

The police identified the victim as Olatunde Femi.

Elkana said that preliminary investigations showed that the man got trapped and died while operating the machine at about 10:20 pm on November 19.

“Consequently, the victim died on the spot. Homicide detectives visited the scene. The corpse was evacuated to a public morgue for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing,” Elkana stated.

Elkana also told how police officers and other Emergency Agencies rescued 11 passengers involved in a boat mishap at Amuwo-Odofin area of the state on November 20.

He stated: “On 20/11/2019 at about 0815hrs, a wooden boat fitted with 30HP Yamaha Engine, operated by one Adesuyi John ‘M’, of Itun-Agan Community, Anuwo-Odofin with 13 passengers on board, allegedly collided with an NPA Tug Boat, with inscription ‘Lárana and No 9252723, at Itun Àga Area, Amuwo Odofin. Consequently, the wooden boat capsized and the passengers got drowned. However, Teams of Marine Policemen, Firefighters, Lasema and other emergency management agencies swiftly mobilized to the scene, 11 of the passengers were rescued alive while two others are still missing. Meanwhile, Search and Rescue Operations is ongoing.”

A 26-year-old man also drowned while swimming at the National Stadium, Surulere.

The police had received a distress call at about 6:10 pm on November 17 that one Sodiq Yusuf of 26, Hogan Bassey Street, Surulere, allegedly got drowned while swimming in the National Stadium swimming pool at Surulere.

A team of policemen was mobilized to the scene. The 26-year-old victim was rescued and rushed to Randle General Hospital, Surulere where he later died. The corpse was deposited at the Mainland General Hospital Morgue, Yaba for autopsy.

Meanwhile, one locally-made double-barrel pistol and three unexpended cartridges were allegedly recovered from two armed robbery suspects arrested while hibernating in an uncompleted building on BJ Street, Shagari Estate. The suspects were identified as one 40-year-old Kolawole and Eze, 30.
