Police have shot dead five members of a kidnap gang in Ikom, Cross River State.
Reports say the kidnappers were killed today in an ambush by men of the state police command, in a bid to rescue a female victim in their custody.
The victim, who is said to be a prominent indigene of the state, was rescued alive during operation. Police are yet to release her identity.
The kidnappers had demanded a N50 million ransom from the victim’s family and had rebuffed all attempts to make them accept a lesser amount.
This culminated in the rescue operation by the police.
