Two suspected armed robbers were shot to death by the police in Ogun State early today.
According to the state police spokesman, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects were robbing motorists on the Sagamu highway when officers from Ogbere Division received a distress call and raced to the scene.
The suspected robbers were allegedly killed and another one arrested when they engaged the police in gun battle.
Oyeyemi said that the police team was led by the DPO at Ogbere, SP John Okon.
He further revealed in a statement: “S.PJohn Okon led his Anti-Robbery men to the scene where they met the robbers’ dispossessing commuters of their valuables.
“On sighting the policemen, the bandits engaged them in gun duel which lasted for hours. At the end of the encounter, two members of the dreaded syndicate were gunned down and one was arrested alive, while others escaped with various degrees of gunshot injuries.
“The victims were rescued unhurt while serious manhunt has been launched for the escaped members of the gang. Recovered from them are one single barrel gun, one phone, and a carton of car sound protector.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP, Ahmed Iliyasu who commended the gallantry display of his men therefore appealed to members of the public especially hospitals and other health workers to inform the Police if anybody with gunshot wound is seen around their areas. He stated further that the Command is determined and resolute in its war against crime and criminality and any criminal who dare come to Ogun State for the purpose of committing crime will be crushed.”
