Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has received an official invitation from the police over allegations of forgery and inciting disturbance.
The letter, dated August 1, 2025, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede, Head of the IGP Monitoring Unit, requested Sowore to appear ar the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday, August 4, 2025, for questioning in connection with a case reported on July 31.
“In view of the foregoing and in the spirit of fair hearing, you are kindly requested to interview the undersigned through the SP Abdulhafiz Garba… by 1000hrs to shed more light on the allegations,” the letter stated.
The letter cited Section 53(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2025 as the legal basis for the summons.
But Sowore, in a reaction posted on his social media platforms, described the invitation as part of a broader plot to silence him, calling it “another voyage” of political persecution.
“The illegal IGP of the Nigeria Police Force, Kayode Egbetokun, is excreting bricks and can’t stand the heat anymore… they’ve invited me to his ‘IGP’ Monitoring Unit section for ‘Forgery and INCTING Disturbance’ investigations, they claimed,” Sowore wrote,
He added that he would honour the invitation and rally his supporters in the revolutionary struggle to accompany him.
In a surprising twist, however, the scheduled meeting was abruptly postponed.
Sowore later shared a message purportedly from SP Hafiz Garba, the investigating officer, which read: “Please be informed that your meeting with DCP Akin Fakorede… has been postponed. This is due to the unavailability of the Head on that date, as he will be attending to an urgent national assignment in the North East.”
