Two men suspected to be armed robbers have been shot dead in Ogun State.

According to the state police spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects were killed in Ijebu-Ode area of the state during a shootout with the police.

Oyeyemi told NewsmakersNG that the incident followed an intelligence report received at the police headquarters, in Abeokuta, that a robbery gang from Onitsha had arrived at GRA in Ijebu-Ode.

He stated: “On receiving the information, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Ahmed Iliyasu directed the Officer-in-Charge of FSARS, SP Uba Adam, to go after the hoodlums and bring them to justice. In compliance with the CP’s order, the operatives of FSARS swung into action and accosted them at GRA in Ijebu-Ode. On sighting the policemen, the robbers engaged them in gunbattle which lasted for about 30 minutes. At the end of the encounter, two of the robbers were shot dead while the other two escaped with bullet wounds.”

Items allegedly recovered from the gang were listed as “one AK47 rifle with Breach No- 804403, two pump action guns with defaced breach numbers, 57 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, 32 rounds of live cartridges, some assorted charms and unregistered Toyota Previa bus used for their operation”.

Oyeyemi added that the CP had expressed satisfaction on the gallant performance of his men and had “ordered a serious manhunt for the escaped members of the gang. He equally appealed to hospitals and traditional healers to notify the Police if anybody with gunshot injury is seen in their area”.
