Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled a daring plot to kidnap a Chinese national for a ₦50 million ransom, arresting two suspected conspirators before the plan could be executed.
The suspects, identified as Chinedu Onwuemena, 41, and Jimoh Ojo, 37, were arrested by officers attached to the Obalende Division following what police described as credible and actionable intelligence on an imminent abduction along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.
The arrest, according to the Command, was made around 5:30 p.m. on June 9, after the Divisional Police Officer swiftly mobilised surveillance and tactical teams to the identified location.
Police said the operation successfully disrupted what appeared to be a carefully coordinated kidnap scheme targeting a Chinese expatriate working in Ogun State.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly planned to abduct the foreign national and demand a ransom of ₦50 million.
Investigators further uncovered that Onwuemena allegedly used his position as an interpreter and driver within the victim’s company to orchestrate the criminal conspiracy from within.
The police described the development as a disturbing case of insider collaboration designed to compromise the safety of the expatriate.
Further findings indicated that the two suspects were working with another accomplice who fled before the police operation.
Security operatives have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspect, while detectives intensify efforts to uncover the full network behind the aborted kidnap plot.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further discreet and comprehensive investigation.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, praised the professionalism, vigilance, and swift response of the Obalende Division operatives whose actions, he said, prevented what could have escalated into a major kidnapping incident.
The police boss also stressed the importance of timely intelligence and community cooperation in combating crime, assuring residents and members of the business community that the Command remains committed to intelligence-led policing and the relentless pursuit of criminal elements across the state.
The Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to security agencies.
