The Police Service Commission (PSC) has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment of 50,000 police constables to February 8, 2026, even as the official application portal remained inaccessible on Wednesday, raising concerns among prospective applicants.
Multiple attempts by Newsmakerslive.org to access the recruitment website at about 1.30pm on Wednesday were unsuccessful, with the page repeatedly returning the message, “Website not available.”
The development comes amid heightened public interest in the nationwide recruitment exercise.
The recruitment, being conducted in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), covers both General Duty and Specialist constable positions.
Applications officially opened on December 15, 2025, as part of a major drive to expand police manpower and strengthen internal security across the country.
The extension of the deadline was announced via an official social media post by the Nigeria Police Force, accompanied by a video message attributed to the PSC.
Authorities explained that the decision followed a review of application patterns, which showed uneven participation across states, with some recording significantly lower numbers than others.
According to the PSC, the recruitment exercise has already attracted hundreds of thousands of applications nationwide. However, states such as Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Anambra reportedly recorded lower turnout compared with northern and North Central states, prompting the extension to allow for broader national representation.
Applicants are required to apply exclusively through the official portal, www.npfapplication.psc.gov.ng, where eligibility criteria and application guidelines are published.
General Duty applicants are expected to possess a minimum of five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics, while Specialist applicants must meet additional trade and experience requirements.
All candidates must be Nigerian citizens by birth and meet stipulated age, medical and physical fitness standards.
As of Wednesday afternoon, access challenges to the recruitment portal persisted, although the police authorities have not issued a formal statement addressing the website downtime.
Prospective applicants have been advised through official channels to continue monitoring the portal and complete their applications before the new closing date of February 8, 2026.
The recruitment of 50,000 constables is one of the largest intakes in recent years and is seen by security analysts as a critical step towards addressing manpower shortages within the Nigeria Police Force, though concerns remain about infrastructure and training capacity.
