Police have arrested two suspected kidnappers in Kaduna State.
The arrest marked a major breakthrough in the efforts of the police to rid the notorious Abuja-Kaduna expressway of kidnappers and other criminal gangs.
The arrests were made on Sunday, when the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by ACP Abba Kyari, embarked on a special operation tagged, ‘Operation Absolute Sanity’, in the area.
The team also recovered two AK47 rifles with serial numbers 5390 and 25401 as well as 135 rounds of ammunition.
NewsmakersNG gathered that members of the gang engaged the IRT team in a gun battle during the encounter.
According to the police, the bandits fled their hideout and abandoned two injured members of the gang.
One identified simply as Lawan, 30 and the other – Aminu Lawan, 25, the arrested suspects were described as some of the most deadly kidnappers on the police list of wanted persons.
Police sources said the IGP had mandated the IRT to maintain the tempo of its operations in the area, especially around the Jere/Katari axis of the Abuja-Kaduna expressway and the Jere-Kagarko Road in Kaduna State.
