The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed coordinated attacks on two schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, during which two persons were killed and several pupils, students and staff abducted by suspected bandits.

The police, in an update issued on Friday, said the attacks occurred in the early hours of the day when gunmen riding motorcycles invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, as well as Community Grammar School and L.A Primary School, Esiele.

According to the command, the attackers abducted an unspecified number of pupils, students and staff members, including the Vice Principal, Mrs Alamu Folawe.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed in a statement that preliminary investigations indicated the assailants carried out simultaneous attacks on the schools and surrounding communities before escaping through forest routes.

The command, however, stated that no pupil or student had been confirmed killed as of the time of filing the report.

“It is important to state that as at the time of filing this report, no pupil or student has been confirmed killed during the incident,” the statement said.

The police confirmed that two adults lost their lives during the attacks.

One of the victims was identified simply as Mr Adesiyan, an Assistant Headmaster, who was reportedly killed by the attackers.

An okada rider was also shot dead after allegedly resisting attempts by the gunmen to seize his motorcycle.

“Sadly, one Assistant Headmaster identified as Mr Adesiyan was killed during the attack,” the police stated.

“In a related development, an okada rider who reportedly resisted attempts by the attackers to forcefully take his motorcycle was also shot dead.”

The command further explained that Community Grammar School, Esiele, operates within the same premises as L.A Primary School, Esiele, indicating that the attackers struck both institutions during the operation.

Police also revealed that the abductors made away with a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted Vice Principal before setting the vehicle ablaze along a road leading to the forest.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, was said to have led tactical operatives and other security commanders to the affected communities for an on-the-spot assessment and operational coordination.

The police said tactical teams, intelligence platforms and other operational assets had been deployed to intensify rescue efforts and track down the perpetrators.

“The Command assures residents that intensive operations are ongoing and urges members of the public to remain calm, vigilant and supportive by providing timely and credible information that could aid the investigation and rescue efforts,” the statement added.
