Police Capture Fake Soldiers in Ogun

Matilda Omonaiye/

Three men identified as fake soldiers have been captured by the police in Ogun State.

According to the state police spokesman, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the fake soldiers were arrested in Adatan area of Abeokuta.

Oyeyemi identified the suspects as Abayomi Akanji, Adebayo Rasheed Oladimeji, and Lawal Musa Akinmoye.

The other suspects.

He said: “They have been terrorizing residents at Adatan, Bode Olude and other communities under the pretence of being personnels of Nigerian Army. Their activities were at the peak during the fuel crisis when they used to dress up in full Army uniform with which they harassed people at various fuel stations.

“Luck, however, ran against them on the 17th April when the DPO Adatan Division CSP Olajide Joshua, led his men on routine patrol and accosted the first suspect, Abayomi Amos Akanji, in full military camouflage uniform without a name tag.

“His appearance looked suspicious and that prompted the policemen to put some questions to him in order to ascertain his authenticity, but he was unable to give good and satisfactory account of himself as a soldier.

“He was promptly arrested and taken to the station. On interrogation, he confessed to being a fake soldier and that he stole the uniform in an army barrack where he visits frequently.

“He further named his other accomplices who have been parading themselves as soldiers, which included Adebayo Rasheed and Lawal Musa. They were both arrested on the 24th of April 2018. Recovered from them are: one full army camouflage uniform, Nigeria Army folder, Army face cap and vests.

“Meanwhile the Commissioner of Police (CP) Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department for further investigation and prosecution.”
