Leaders of warring factions of transport unions in Lagos have been arrested by the police following threats to safety of lives and properties in some communities in the state.
In a statement issued by the Lagos State Task Force (LSTF), state authorities assured that lives and properties are safe around Mafoluku, Shogunle, Sadiku, Ladipo and Oshodi communities.
According to the statement signed by the Head, LSTF’s Public Affairs Unit, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, the taskforce chairman, SP Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria across the entire Oshodi area “are presently under the checks and control of Lagos State Task Force and other security agencies who are strategically positioned for the maintenance of peace and orderliness”.
Trouble started in the communities, when the Chairman of Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State, Chief Rasaq Bello aka Hamburger was shot dead recently, as the All Progressive Congress (APC) held its council primaries at Shogunle-Oshodi.
Hamburger was a member of the Lagos chapter of the NURTW.
Egbeyemi stated that “different warring factional leaders of the NURTW and RTEAN trying to foment trouble around Mafoluku, Shogunle, Sadiku, Ladipo and Oshodi with their supporters have been arrested and are presently with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police Mr. Fatai Owoseni for interrogations”.
Meanwhile, residents and traders around Oshodi have given kudos to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for relocating the Special Forces to Oshodi.
The Lagos State commissioner of police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni was also commended for his prompt response at bringing back normalcy to Oshodi axis.
Egbeyemi enjoined members of the public to ignore “misinformation about ‘Bomb Explosion’ and ‘Security Alert’ around Shogunle and Oshodi trending on various social media thereby creating unnecessary fear amongst traders and residents of the area”.
He warned miscreants and hoodlums to desist from causing chaos around Oshodi and the entire parts of the State.
He also warned that anyone arrested would be prosecuted.
The Chairman, who commended the governor for providing security agencies across the State with modernized equipment, however, called on members of the public to immediately report any unlawful activities of notorious miscreants and hoodlums to appropriate security agencies through ‘112’ and ‘767’ which is Toll-free.
