The Federal Police in Brazil today arrested ex-president Michel Temer over alleged corruption charges at his residence in Sao Paulo after an arrest warrant was issued by Justice Marcelo Bretãs early this morning.
The former president of Brazil who took over the office following the impeachment of the ex-president Dilma Rossef in 2016 has been a target of several accusations of corruption while in the office as the president of the Federal Republic of Brazil. The order of arrest could only be issued after he lost the immunity since he completed his term of office in January 2019.
The Lebanese descendant who is also a doctor at law has been convened to the prisons of the federal police for interrogations and expected to remain in prison while the accusations are formalized against him according to the law.
This is the second time a former president of Brazil would be arrested for corruption. The first has been the ex-president Luis Inácio Lula da Silva who remains in prison till date.
Also arrested along early this morning is the former minister and governor of Rio Moreira Franco and the former Chief of Staff, Eliseu Padilha, who has been declared wanted.
