Police Arrest 1151, Deploy Stun Guns as IGP Reviews Force Order 237

Over a thousand high-profile suspects have been arrested by the police nationwide between August and September, says the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu.

Adamu also announced a review of the Force Order 237 that has to do with the use of force and firearms.

The new order which was reviewed in collaboration with the international committee of the red cross stipulates new guidelines for the use of firearms by police officers.

Adamu made the disclosures Thursday during his monthly press briefing in Abuja. He attributed his achievements to the stronger relationships between the Police and the citizens.

He broke down the various crimes allegedly committed by the suspects as 470 armed robbers, 216 kidnap suspects, 335 suspected cultists, and 130 murder suspects.

He stated that 228 firearms of various descriptions and calibre were recovered in various police operations across the country within the same period.

He added that 231 kidnapped victims have been safely rescued and reunited with their families, while 78 stolen vehicles were also recovered from the criminal elements.

In a bid to address public concerns on the misuse of firearms by the police, Adamu said the Force had acquired and deployed electro-muscular disruption technology-based weaponry, commonly known as Taser or stun gun which he promised recently.

The police boss added that special training was being organized for officers on special operations.

“We are challenged by these achievements to sustain our tempo. This calls for a constant reevaluation of the dynamics of crime and the realignment of our strategies accordingly,” he said.

Pointing out that although there were still some security challenges which currently required the police professional attention, Adamu encouraged all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to renew their vigour in the fight against crimes in the country.
