The police in Lagos have announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state from 3am to 3pm on Saturday, July 12, 2025, as part of sweeping security measures for the Local Government Elections holding in all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
A statement issued today by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, says the restriction, covering all roads and waterways, was agreed upon with other security agencies under the Interagency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) to ensure the peaceful conduct of the elections.
The police also banned armed escorts and security aides from accompanying VIPs to polling units or collation centers, warning that violators will be arrested and prosecuted. Use of sirens and covered number plates anywhere near polling or collation centers is also strictly prohibited.
“Only essential service vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and patrol vehicles of accredited ICCES agencies will be allowed to move during the restriction period,” the statement read.
The police vowed to enforce the movement restriction rigorously, noting that any individual or group flouting the directive will be swiftly arrested and prosecuted. Officers and operatives have been directed to remain professional but firm during the enforcement.
Exemptions apply only to emergency responders, accredited officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), election observers, and journalists on official duty—with valid LASIEC-issued identification tags.
All security personnel, LASIEC officials, media, and observers must visibly wear LASIEC-certified identification tags. “Anyone without such tags will be arrested, investigated and prosecuted,” the police warned.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, called on all residents to cooperate with security personnel and to carry out their civic responsibilities peacefully. He also warned political thugs and their sponsors to steer clear of polling areas, stressing that the law will be enforced without hesitation.
All 15 political parties participating in the election were urged to rein in their supporters and avoid any action that could disrupt the electoral process.
“The full extent of the law will be applied on anyone who violates the peace,” the police stated.
Parents and guardians were also urged to discourage their wards from engaging in acts of violence or voter intimidation.
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the police via emergency lines: 08063299264 or 08065154338.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring a secure, free, and credible election and thanked Lagosians in advance for their cooperation.
