Photos: Protest in Bayelsa over Supreme Court Judgment

Matilda Omonaiye/

All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Bayelsa State took to the streets of Yenagoa, the state capital, this morning to protest yesterday’s ruling by the Supreme Court nullifying the victory of their candidate, David Lyon, during the November 2019 governorship election.

The court, in a unanimous decision by a five-man panel of justices led by Mary Odili, held that Lyon’s running mate in the election, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo, presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The court consequently disqualified the joint ticket that produced them as initial winners.

Aggrieved APC members barricaded major roads in Yenagoa with burnt tyres while chanting protest songs to register their displeasure at the ruling.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the demonstrations started in the night in different parts of Yenagoa.

Commercial activities were affected as businesses shut down for fear of being looted.

At the Ekeki Motor Park, some shops in the Seriake Dickson Shopping Mall were vandalized and looted.

Also vehicles belonging to the state broadcasting corporation were vandalised by the protesters.

Security operatives have been deployed in strategic parts of the city to prevent breakdown of law and order while the party’s secretariat at the Yenizue-Gene area of Yenagoa has been cordoned off by mobile police officers.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC supporters were still on the rampage, moving from one major road to another in the state capital.
