At least five passengers have been confirmed dead and scores of others injured after a Warri–Itakpe Train Service derailed in the Agbor area of Delta State on Monday morning.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident in an official statement issued by its Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, noting that emergency response teams and relevant authorities were immediately deployed to the scene to manage rescue operations and provide assistance.

The derailment reportedly caused at least four coaches to overturn, leaving several passengers trapped and others injured in the chaotic aftermath.

Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media showed upturned coaches and distressed passengers being assisted by bystanders and first responders as rescue efforts intensified.

Unconfirmed eyewitness reports suggest that at least five people died at the scene, while more than 40 injured passengers were evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities have not yet released a final casualty figure as rescue and recovery operations continue.

In its initial reaction, the NRC said it was closely monitoring developments and would issue a fuller statement once more verified information becomes available.

“The Corporation is closely monitoring developments and a detailed statement will be issued as soon as more information becomes available. The NRC urges the public to remain calm and rely only on official channels for verified updates,” Opeifa stated.

Emergency teams remain at the derailment site as investigators work to determine the cause of the incident.

The Warri–Itakpe route, one of Nigeria’s key standard gauge rail services, has recorded growing passenger traffic in recent years, making the latest crash one of the most serious disruptions on the corridor in recent times.
