A fire triggered by a petrol-laden tanker that spilled its content on the road consumed nine vehicles in Ojo area of Lagos today.

The incident occured despite claims by the police that the fuel spilled by the tanker was neutralised by firemen immediately it was noticed yesterday night and the truck towed away afterwards.

Eyewitnesses however told NewsmakersNG that the truck was not removed from the scene by the fire service personnel and consequently sparked the fire after it was rammed by a speeding vehicle.

A statement by the police, which confirmed the incident, said it occured about 5am, opposite Ojo Military Barracks, along Lagos-Badagry expressway.

The statement released by police spokesman, CSP Chike Oti, said four articulated vehicles, a mini truck and four mini buses were razed by the fire before it was brought under control.

He said police were investigating the cause of the fire.
