Football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pelé, has died today at 82 after a long battle with cancer.
Pele was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a forward, wearing Jersey Number 10 and won three World Cups. The football icon scored over 1,000 career goals which included 77 international strikes for Brazil.
Regarded as one of the greatest players of all time and labeled “the greatest” by FIFA, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century.
Pele was a former Minister of Sports in Brazil. He died at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital, in São Paulo, Brazil.
He is survived by his wife, Assaria Lemos Seixas, and seven children.
