The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its proposed national convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, following a recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The party’s Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, announced the decision at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, alongside the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Mohammed stated that the party had received the Certified True Copy of the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho on 31 October 2025 in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025.
He explained that the court ordered the suspension of the PDP’s planned national convention pending the resolution of certain legal issues.
“In strict adherence to the rule of law and due process, the PDP hereby suspends and cancels the proposed Ibadan National Convention pending the decision of the Court of Appeal,” Mohammed said. “Any continuation with the proposed convention at this time would amount to a violation of the rule of law and shall not be condoned.”
He added that the party had already lodged an appeal before the Court of Appeal for further judicial interpretation of the ruling, stressing that the PDP’s actions were guided by its commitment to legality and internal democracy.
The leadership also confirmed that it had formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the suspension, in compliance with the court’s directive.
A letter dated November 4, 2025 and addressed to the INEC Chairman urged the Commission to refrain from monitoring or giving recognition to any purported PDP convention until the pending legal issues were resolved.
While reacting to reports of an ex-parte order issued by a High Court in Oyo State, the PDP leadership clarified that such an order could not override the subsisting judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
“As a responsible, law-abiding, and democratic institution, the PDP remains unwavering in its commitment to the rule of law, constitutional governance, and internal party democracy,” the statement read.
The party assured its members and supporters that all subsequent actions would align with its constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
