A 43-year-old clergyman, identified as Jacob Irewa, has been arrested by the Kogi State Police Command for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze following a domestic dispute in Lokoja.
The incident occurred at about 8.30pm on Friday, August 14, at Oworo Estate in the Felele area of the Kogi State capital.
Newsmakerslive.org learned that the incident had sparked outrage, with residents and the victim’s family demanding justice.
The police said its B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.
According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, preliminary investigation indicated that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after Irawo allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.
The police said Irewa subsequently threatened his wife, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and allegedly set her on fire.
The victim survived the attack and was receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele, according to the police.
The command also said the suspect admitted during questioning to setting his wife ablaze.
Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
The police said the suspect was being investigated for alleged attempted culpable homicide, adding that the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.
