The Prayer and Support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and Other Security Agencies (PASNAFOSA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, who reportedly died while in the custody of his abductors in Katsina State.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Ambassador Mary Abayomi-Fatile, the group condemned the circumstances surrounding the death of the retired senior military officer, describing it as painful and disturbing.
The late Major General Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife while travelling through Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
According to PASNAFOSA, the retired officer reportedly died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension during captivity. This claim has been disputed by his son.
The group said it was tragic that a man who dedicated his life to defending Nigeria and combating insecurity eventually fell victim to the same criminal elements threatening the country’s peace and stability.
“Major General Rabe Abubakar served Nigeria with honour, professionalism, courage and utmost loyalty. His death is not only a great loss to his immediate family but also to Katsina State, the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation as a whole,” the statement said.
PASNAFOSA urged the Federal Government, security agencies and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to end banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.
The organisation also called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the abduction and death of the retired general, including their sponsors.
The group further reiterated its opposition to the continued granting of amnesty to repentant terrorists without adequate accountability.
It expressed concern over recent moves to reintegrate former Boko Haram members into communities despite the destruction and loss of lives linked to insurgency activities.
“While recognising the importance of rehabilitation programmes where necessary, we maintain that justice, accountability and the security of innocent Nigerians must remain paramount,” the statement added.
PASNAFOSA stressed that the sacrifices of members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies who died in service to the nation must not be undermined.
The group extended condolences to the family of the late Major General Abubakar, the government and people of Katsina State, and the Nigerian Armed Forces, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his family.
