Renowned banker, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Pascal Gabriel Dozie, founder of the defunct Diamond Bank (now Access Bank), has died—just 24 hours before his 86th birthday.

Dozie, who was also the pioneer Chairman of MTN Nigeria, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2025. He was born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State.

A man of remarkable intellect, Dozie began his education at Our Lady’s School, Emekuku, before proceeding to the London School of Economics, where he earned a degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Administrative Science.

In 1991, he founded Diamond Bank, which he successfully grew into one of Nigeria’s most respected financial institutions. He later handed over its leadership to his son, Uzoma Dozie.

As Chairman of MTN Nigeria, Dozie played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s telecommunications landscape. His legacy was defined by visionary leadership, integrity, and humility. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, and their children.
