Oyo Will Match UNESCO Standard in Education Funding – Makinde

Ololade Adeyanju/

Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has restated the commitment of his administration to ensuring it meets up with UNESCO’s recommended allocation of 15 to 20 percent of the total annual budget to education.

Makinde stated this in a statement he posted on Twitter via his handle, @seyimakinde, today to commemorate this year’s World Teachers Day.

Read the statement below:

“On World Teachers Day, we appreciate our teachers in Oyo State delivering services sometimes, under difficult conditions. Our administration will continue with our plans to improve learning conditions in all state-owned schools in Oyo State.

“The costs incurred on the ongoing renovation of the first batch of 100 state-owned schools, and the provision of running grants to schools is possible because of the increased budgetary allocation to education by our administration.

“Our campaign promise was to increase the budgetary allocation to education to 10% of the annual budget in our first year, increasing annually every year until we match UNESCO’s recommended 15-20% of the total annual budget.

“To show my commitment to our teachers’ welfare, I donated my salary for my entire four-year tenure to the Teachers’ Pension Fund. Our administration will continue to pay teachers’ remuneration on time.

“We have also been gradually clearing up the backlog of pensions and gratuities owed since 2011.

“We are committed to ensuring that our teachers are trained and retrained to deliver the best service to our children in Oyo State. Happy World Teachers Day!”
