The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State wing, has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his consistent support to teachers, citing prompt payment of salaries, recruitment of new teachers, career progression opportunities, and the appointment of a teacher as the Executive Chairperson of the Oyo State Post-Primary Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).
Speaking during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Ibadan today, the Oyo NUT Chairman, Comrade Raji Oladimeji Ismail, described Makinde’s policies as impactful, noting that his administration had ended the six-year promotion waiting period for primary school teachers. He also highlighted the creation of 10 TESCOM zonal offices and the appointment of teachers as Permanent Secretaries/Tutor Generals.
Ismail said his leadership had strengthened welfare schemes for teachers, with the government reviewing upward car and housing loan packages. However, he raised concerns over challenges such as inadequate funding for education, infrastructural deficits, and the need for continuous capacity development of teachers. He urged the state government to expedite inter-zonal transfer approvals and the release of running grants to school heads.
In his address, the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, assured teachers that promotion letters for 2023/2024 had been approved and would soon be released. He confirmed that Governor Makinde had also approved the long-pending inter-zonal transfer of 2005 teachers and the integration of teachers on secondment into TESCOM’s employment structure.
Dr. Adeniran, however, urged teachers, especially the newly recruited, to follow civil service channels for grievances rather than airing them on social media.

The National President of NUT, Comrade Audi Titus Amba, represented by Comrade Shaibu Olayinka Yisa, also praised Makinde’s reforms in Oyo’s education sector, stressing that this year’s theme, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” underscored the need to build resilience and unity among teachers.
The celebration, chaired by the Osi Olubadan-designate, HRM Oba Abiodun Kola Daisi, had in attendance the Oyo NLC Chairman, Comrade Kayode Martins; the Secretary of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, Comrade Segun Abatan; and other education stakeholders.
