More than half a million officers were deployed today by AIG Adeleye Oyebade who is in charge of Zone XI, comprising of Oyo, Ondo, and Osun states as the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu’s Operation Puff Adder berths in the region.
Unveiling the mission and vision of the special squad in Osogbo, the Osun State capital today, Oyebade said, “As we all know, the primary objective of any serious government is the provision of security and welfare for its people. Conscious of this mandate, the Government of Nigeria is resolved to protect its citizens. This is why the president who is concerned about the security of this country has directed the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that crimes and criminalities are curtailed throughout the country within the shortest possible time.
“In compliance with the president’s directive, therefore, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, NPM, mni recently rejigged our security architecture by launching a new operational outfit code named ‘Operation Puff Adder’. The new outfit, since its inauguration, has begun to yield positive results. Consequently, the IGP has directed that the outfit be replicated in all the Zonal and State Commands to complement existing security structures.”
According to Oyebade, Operation Puff Adder was launched at Zone XI today with over 500 highly disciplined, dedicated and professional personnel drawn from various departments and units of the Zonal Command.
He said, “It is our conviction that with the new security outfit added to the existing security apparatus in the Zone, security challenges in the three states under the Zone will be tackled adequately.
“The outfit has the mandate to carry out an aggressive onslaught against criminals and take the fight against heinous crimes to the door steps of die-hard criminals in the three states.”
Oyebade assured that operatives of the special outfit will be diligent, and carry out the assigned duty with integrity and respect for the fundamental human rights of the citizens they are meant to serve.
“It is our conviction that citizens will begin to see the dividends of the establishment of this outfit. By so doing, the expected but elusive people’s confidence in the police will be restored,” he said, adding that the challenges of prevailing heinous crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, burglary, cattle rustling, banditry and other serious crimes “often stare us in the face. Given this circumstance, the Police cannot abdicate its responsibility hence there is need to confront these hydra-headed monsters headlong”.
He urged the public to cooperate with the police by providing useful, credible and timely information to the outfit to enable it succeed in its mandate.
