Oba Ademola Makinde, the Owa of Igbajo, has expressed his disagreement with the recent court ruling that reinstated Oba Adegboyega Famodun as the Owa of Igbajo.
Following the ruling by the Osun State High Court on January 30, 2025, which nullified the state government’s action to revoke Famodun’s appointment, Oba Makinde called for peace and unity in the community.
In his statement, Makinde acknowledged that the court’s judgment might have caused varying reactions among the people, but urged all parties to remain calm.
He emphasised that, although the judgment was a significant development, it did not signify the end of the matter, as an appeal was still a possibility.
“Igbajo is bigger than us all,” he said, urging the community to focus on preserving its dignity and maintaining unity despite the legal challenges.
Makinde also called for peaceful conduct during the ongoing tensions, warning against actions that might lead to chaos or harm.
“Even in the face of jubilation, please maintain decorum,” he stressed, highlighting the importance of navigating the situation with respect for the law and mutual respect.
The court’s ruling on January 30, 2025, reinstated Famodun as the Owa of Igbajo after a lengthy dispute that began with his appointment in November 2022 by the former Governor of Osun, Gboyega Oyetola.
Famodun’s appointment was challenged by some factions within Igbajo, citing violations of traditional customs.
Governor Ademola Adeleke later revoked Famodun’s appointment in January 2024, citing recommendations from a panel investigating chieftaincy disputes.
However, the court ruled that Adeleke’s Executive Order and White Paper were invalid, reinstating Famodun’s appointment.
Oba Makinde, who has maintained his position as the Owa of Igbajo-Iloro, affirmed that the status quo remained until the matter was fully resolved.
He called on the people of Igbajo to stay resilient and united in the face of the ongoing legal proceedings, stressing the importance of upholding peace in the community.
