Over N15.7 million has been raised within three days for Lagos-based Uber driver, Edun Feyisetan Diekololaoluwa, who was shot in the face by armed robbers while on duty.

The overwhelming support followed viral posts by filmmaker, Tayo Aina @tayoainafilms and content creator, Tomi Waziri @tomi_waziri who mobilised donations for the victim’s urgent facial reconstructive surgery.

According to Aina, who revealed that Edun was his university classmate, the driver was attacked in Lagos two weeks ago and sustained a gunshot wound to the eye. Aina said the cost of surgery was “crazy expensive”, prompting his decision to seek public help.

“A uni classmate of mine who was driving Uber to make a living got shot in the eye in Lagos two weeks ago by armed robbers, and he is currently struggling for his life,” Aina wrote on X. “Over the past 72 hours, we have been able to raise N15,728,692 for his surgery. I got the opportunity to speak to him yesterday and he was very thankful to you all.”

He explained that the victim’s initial Opay account (Onaolapo Adedapo Edun – 9016617168) was temporarily restricted due to a surge in transactions, forcing donors to switch to an alternative First Bank account (Edun Onaolapo ADEDAPO – 3223905963) shared in subsequent updates.

Edun’s story was first brought to public attention by Tomi Waziri, who recounted surviving a similar shooting incident six years ago. In his post, Waziri pleaded with Nigerians to assist the 38-year-old driver, describing his injuries as life-threatening.

“Uber driver shot in the face like me and feared he will not be able to see again needs our help,” Waziri posted. “Please I’m pleading on his behalf to support in any way you can. Nothing is too small.”

The combined efforts of both influencers triggered a surge of compassion online, as thousands of Nigerians donated through bank transfers and a GoFundMe link (gofund.me/a18533346) to support Edun’s treatment.

Many social media users commended the transparency of the campaign and praised Nigerians’ collective response, while others called on the Lagos State Government to urgently address the worsening insecurity that has left many drivers and commuters vulnerable.

“Insecurity in Lagos is at an all-time high, and the government needs to do something about it so people can feel safe,” Aina added in his post.

As of Monday morning, the total donations stood at N15,728,692, enough to begin advanced surgical procedures to save Edun’s sight and reconstruct his facial structure.

He is expected to undergo treatment once medical and logistical arrangements are completed.
