Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has launched a legal battle to reclaim his position following his controversial impeachment.
On February 12, Obasa filed a motion at the Ikeja Division of the Lagos State High Court, seeking an accelerated hearing to challenge the legitimacy of his ousting.
The suit names the Lagos State House of Assembly and the newly appointed Speaker, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, as defendants.
Obasa contends that his removal was procedurally flawed and is demanding immediate reinstatement.
Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, 2025, was executed by more than two-thirds of the 40-member legislative body, citing allegations of financial misappropriation and abuse of office.
Notably, this political upheaval occurred while Obasa was abroad, a circumstance he argues undermines the validity of the proceedings.
Upon his return to Lagos on January 25, 2025, Obasa vehemently denied the corruption allegations, labelling them as baseless and politically motivated.
He challenged his accusers to substantiate their claims and asserted his continued legitimacy as Speaker.
In response, the Lagos State House of Assembly has staunchly defended the legality of Obasa’s removal. The legislative body maintains that due process was meticulously followed, rendering the impeachment both lawful and irreversible.
Obasa’s tenure as Speaker has been marred by multiple controversies, including allegations of approving exorbitant expenditures and mismanagement of funds.
Despite surviving previous attempts to unseat him, the recent impeachment marks the most significant challenge to his political career to date.
