A student of the Osun State University has been set on fire for refusing to join a secret cult on campus.
The university in a statement yesterday said the incident occurred on Saturday.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, identified the student as Victor Oke, a part-time final year Political Science student.
The statement, which was released to newsmen in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, discloses that before attempting to burn Oke to death, the cultists had shot at him and inflicted machete cuts on him.
Adesoji said after the assault, Oke was set on fire but was luckily rescued and taken to the hospital.
He said efforts are ongoing to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are unmasked and brought to justice.
“We noticed that Victor was absent for his final paper in the afternoon and decided to contact his parents.
“It was later discovered that he was attacked by unknown cultists in the early hours of Saturday. Victor was shouting that he was not joining their cult group while they continued to hit him with cutlasses; hard stones and attempted to burn him, partially succeeding before he was eventually rescued.
“The University security unit is currently working with the Police to ensure the culprits are exposed and brought to book.
”The cultists must be arrested,” the statement reads in part.”
