The management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, has announced the indifinite closure of the institution following a violent protest that greeted the death of a student yesterday.
The student reportedly went on rampage this morning, burning down the school’s health centre to protest the death of a Higher National Diploma student of Applied Chemistry, Aminu Sheu, who slumped in the examination hall and later died at a private hospital.
The students claimed that the deceased would not have died if he was given prompt attention at the school’s health centre.
The students also accused the management of the polytechnic of failing to equip the health centre despite collecting N2,000 from each student as medical fee.
A student, who pleaded anonymity, alleged that workers at the health centre told them that they had closed after 4.00pm and could not attend to the deceased.
A statement by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. B. M. Salawu, directed the students to vacate the school premises with immediate effect.
The statement also commiserated with the family of the deceased and called for calm among the students.
