Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the state’s governorship election scheduled for August next year, in which he is widely expected to seek a second term.

The resignation was announced on Monday night in a statement by his spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, who said the governor’s decision took effect on November 4, 2025.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has resigned his membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) since November 4th, 2025,” Rasheed said.

According to the statement, the resignation letter was addressed to the PDP Chairman for Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North Local Government Area of the state.

“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” Rasheed quoted the letter as stating.

“I thank the People’s Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (Represented Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State under the People’s Democratic Party.”

The spokesperson did not disclose the political party the governor intends to join next. However, there have been reports that Adeleke had explored a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), allegedly with the backing of President Bola Tinubu.

Those moves were, however, said to have been blocked by the APC leadership in Osun State.

Although Adeleke was elected governor on the platform of the PDP, his resignation suggests he may contest the 2026 governorship election under a different political party.

His exit makes him the latest sitting governor to dump the PDP amid speculations of further defections.

Governors of Delta, Akwa Ibom and Enugu states have also recently left the opposition party.

  1. I think their should be a constitution binding those in political parties, because all of them just displaying non challenge attitude. How can a particular party gave you platform and because of crisis in the party you want to leave and join other parties. They should have just be in the party and come together to make things right. I wish him all the best in his new political party.
