Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has secured a second term as Governor of Osun State, defeating his closest challenger, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, in Saturday’s governorship election.
Adeleke was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the conclusion of collation of results from all 30 Local Government Areas of the state.
The incumbent polled 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji scored 444,815 votes, giving Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes.
The candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Najeem Salaam, finished a distant third with 17,180 votes.
The result represents a decisive victory for Adeleke, who secured the highest number of votes in 19 of the state’s 30 LGAs, while Oyebamiji won 11.
Adeleke takes 19 LGAs
According to the results announced by INEC, Adeleke won:
Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore, Iwo, Osogbo, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ifelodun, Odo-Otin, Oriade, Orolu, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, Ayedire, Ayedaade, Ila, Boluwaduro and Ejigbo.
Oyebamiji, meanwhile, prevailed in:
Olorunda, Ife South, Ola-Oluwa, Isokan, Atakumosa East, Irewole, Ilesa East, Obokun, Irepodun, Boripe and Atakumosa West.
Adeleke’s strongest showing came in Osogbo, where he polled 36,480 votes against Oyebamiji’s 30,474. He also recorded commanding victories in Ede North, with 35,427 votes, and Ife East, where he scored 27,201 votes.
Oyebamiji, however, recorded a particularly strong performance in Irewole, where he secured 29,972 votes against Adeleke’s 10,934.
The APC candidate also won Boripe, with 19,963 votes to Adeleke’s 12,448; Ilesa East, 16,208 to 12,280; and Obokun, 16,120 to 12,023.
Adeleke consolidates Osun control
The election pitted the incumbent governor against Oyebamiji, a former Commissioner for Finance and former Managing Director of the Osun State Investment Company, in what was widely regarded as a closely fought contest.
Despite the APC’s strong showing in several parts of Osun, Adeleke’s victories across a broad spread of the state, combined with substantial vote margins in some LGAs, gave him an overall advantage of more than 66,000 votes.
The final figures also showed the election to be largely a two-horse race between Accord and APC, with the ADC trailing far behind.
Adeleke’s victory gives him another four-year mandate to govern Osun State.
The outcome also marks another significant chapter in the political career of the Adeleke family in Osun, with the governor now set to continue his administration beyond his first term.
Final tally: Adeleke — 511,067; Oyebamiji — 444,815; Najeem Salaam — 17,180. Adeleke’s winning margin: 66,252 votes.
