The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned what it described as a brutal attack on two of its members during the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR) exercise at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media and Information, Mogaji Kola Olabisi, the party alleged that hoodlums loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stormed the registration centre and unleashed violence on APC Ward 1 Councillor, Hon. Taiwo Kazeem, and another member, Oladimeji Olamilekan.
According to the APC, the attackers were led by one Hassan Oyewo Abdullahi, alleged leader of the notorious “One Million Gang,” who reportedly wielded a concealed short axe and gun. The party said the victims sustained head injuries before registrants at the centre intervened to save them from being killed.
The APC further alleged that the suspects were shielded from arrest by the former Ifelodun Local Government Chairman, Sarafadeen Awotunde, popularly known as “Spain,” who allegedly stormed the INEC office with thugs to whisk them away.
Describing the incident as a “shameful criminal conduct inimical to public peace,” the APC called on the Osun State Commissioner of Police to arrest and prosecute Awotunde and his gang without delay.
“It is necessary to effect the urgent arrest and arraignment of Awotunde based on his past records of self-confession that himself and his gang are always responsible for disturbing peace and harmony in the Ikirun axis,” the statement read.
The APC maintained that the attack was a deliberate attempt to intimidate its members and disrupt their participation in the voter registration exercise, insisting that the suspects must be brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.
