Christmas Day, meant to be a moment of warmth and celebration, turned into a lifelong nightmare for a grieving mother in Kwale, Delta State, after her only child, 32-year-old Amauche Lucky Ezeji, was shot dead just outside their home.

According to the family, the incident happened around 8 p.m. on Askaka Road, when Amauche, who had been indoors, received a phone call that prompted him to step outside. Within seconds, the family said, a bullet struck him in the chest, cutting short a life he had been trying to rebuild after earlier family losses.

His mother, Mrs. Chinyere Emeagi, who spoke through tears, said she watched in disbelief as the festive night changed into chaos and sorrow.

“Efforts to save Amauche’s life were futile as he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” she said, revealing that her son had been planning to bury his late father on January 7, 2026, a burial he will now tragically be part of.

Neighbors and friends described Amauche as a quiet young man devoted to his mother, who raised him alone. His death has shocked the Kwale community, where Christmas celebrations were abruptly replaced by mourning.

The family confirmed that the incident was promptly reported to the police.

The Delta State Police Command has reportedly launched an investigation into the killing to determine who called Amauche moments before the gunshot and what could have motivated the attack. No arrests had been confirmed at press time.
