The police in Ogun have told how a suspected armed robber was shot dead on Tuesday when officers engaged a gang that blocked the Shagamu-Ore Expressway.

Ogun state police spokesman, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi told NewsmakersNG in a statement today that the suspect was killed in the early hours of Tuesday, September 4, by men of Ogun State Police Command along Shagamu/Ore express road.

According to him, the suspect was shot dead, when his gang engaged policemen attached to Odogbolu Divisional Headquarters in a gun battle, following a distress call received by the DPO Odogbolu Division SP Simire Hilary that some hoodlums had blocked the expressway in an attempt to rob.

Oyeyemi stated: “On receiving the information, the DPO led his Anti-Robbery team to the scene where they met the robbers attacking a truck driver, on sighting the Police, the hoodlums opened fire on the policemen and the policemen retaliated. At the end of the encounter, one of the hoodlums was shot dead while other members of the gang escaped into the bush with bullet wounds. The truck driver, one Micheal Okechuckwu, was rescued unhurt.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Ahmed Iliyasu who expressed satisfaction on the gallantry of his men has ordered that the remaining members of the gang should be hunted and brought to book. He equally appealed to hospitals, as well as traditional healers to notify the police if anybody is seen with a bullet injury in their area.
