Officers monitoring the governorship election in Ondo State have confirmed the arrest of two suspects after bandits struck and maimed a voter at a polling booth in Akure, the state capital.
The police also confirmed reports that a boat carrying election materials with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) capsized at Ilaje Local Government Area.
The state police spokesman, SP Tee-Leo Okoro confirmed the accident report.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of Investigations in Ondo State, Mr Lanre Bankole, also confirmed the attack by hoodlums on a voter.
According to him, the victim who sustained machete cut injuries was rushed to the hospital by the police, and he was responding to treatment.
He said that the victim had told the police that he could identify his attackers.
NewsmakersNG also heard reports of sporadic shooting at Edo Lodge Hotel, at Okeijebu area of Akure, where thugs allegedly attempted to scare voters away at a polling unit.
Security personnel were, however, seen in their numbers at polling units ensuring smooth running of the electioneering process.
The Force Marine Officer, CSP Benjamin Ogungbure, alongside state marine officers from Delta, Edo States said that adequate security was ensured along the waterways in Ondo State.
They left igbokoda early in the morning to Araromi seaside, Awoye- Igo, Apata, Arogbo axis, all In the coastal area of the state.
Ogungbure said all areas visited were calm and that no complaint came from the waterways.
