The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has constituted a Chieftaincy Review Committee to conduct a comprehensive assessment of traditional institutions across Ibadan.

The committee is mandated to verify the appointments of all Baales, who serve as district or village heads, and Mogajis, the recognised heads of extended family compounds, to ensure that each office holder meets the established requirements of their position.

As part of the exercise, all Baales and Mogajis have been directed to obtain verification forms from their respective Traditional Councils.

The completed forms are to be returned with supporting documents, including certificates of appointment, coronation photographs taken with the Olubadan who installed them, and other relevant records required to confirm their legitimacy.

Ibadan’s traditional governance structure is rooted in a long established chieftaincy system under the authority of the Olubadan, with the Olubadan in Council serving as the apex decision making body on customary matters.

Mogajis play a key role at the family level, including the nomination of candidates for higher traditional titles, while Baales administer towns and villages under the overall supervision of the Olubadan.

Periodic reviews of appointments are not unusual, particularly amid concerns over the proliferation of titles and disputes over proper installation procedures in recent years.

One of the Baales confirmed the development to Newsmakerslive.org.
Responding to a WhatsApp enquiry, he said, “It’s true. We have been given forms to fill.”
