The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away, marking the end of a brief but significant reign.
The monarch died in the early hours of today, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday.
Oba Olakulehin, who was born on July 5, 1935, ascended the throne in July 2024 following the demise of his predecessor, Oba Lekan Balogun, who died in March 2024.
His formal coronation took place on July 12, 2024, when he received the staff of office from the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, at a ceremony attended by traditional rulers, political dignitaries, and citizens from across Ibadanland.
Until his ascension, Oba Olakulehin was the Balogun of Ibadanland, a title which placed him next in line to the throne under the city’s unique succession system. The Ibadan chieftaincy system, unlike that of many other Yoruba kingdoms, operates a rotational and hierarchical process through two lines — the Egbe Agba (civil line) and the Balogun (military line).
Oba Olakulehin rose through the ranks over several decades, eventually becoming the most senior chief on the Balogun line, which made him eligible for the throne when it became vacant.
His emergence was not without controversy, as concerns were raised in early 2024 about his health and physical fitness for the rigours of the throne. Nonetheless, following consultations among the Olubadan-in-Council, the kingmakers, and state authorities, he was confirmed and installed as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Oba Olakulehin’s short reign was marked by efforts to uphold the cultural heritage of Ibadan and maintain unity among the traditional and political stakeholders of the historical city.
Despite the brevity of his tenure, he was widely respected for his years of service in the Ibadan traditional council and for his deep knowledge of the city’s chieftaincy history.
According to tradition, the next Olubadan is expected to be chosen from the Egbe Agba line, in line with the alternating succession arrangement. The most senior chief on that line is former Oyo State governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Olubadan-in-Council and the Oyo State Government in the coming days.
