A 26-year-old suspect at the centre of a deadly shooting spree in the United States, Olaolukitan Adon‑Abel, has been found dead in his cell at a jail in DeKalb County, Georgia.
Authorities confirmed that Adon-Abel, whose Yoruba name highlights his Nigerian heritage, was discovered unresponsive late on Tuesday night at the DeKalb County detention facility.
Officials from the sheriff’s office said emergency life-saving measures were immediately carried out, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of death has not yet been established.
Authorities said an internal investigation is underway, although there is currently no indication of foul play.
Adon-Abel had been facing multiple murder charges following a series of shootings across DeKalb County earlier this month that left three people dead.
The incidents, described by investigators as random and violent, had triggered widespread concern within local communities.
Law enforcement agencies in Georgia had linked the suspect to multiple crime scenes, leading to his arrest and detention pending trial.
The case had drawn significant attention due to the nature of the attacks and the profile of the suspect, who was reported to have links to the United Kingdom.
Officials have not yet released further details surrounding the circumstances of his death, but standard procedures typically involve an independent medical examination and review of custodial conditions.
The development marks a sudden turn in a case that had already shocked residents, leaving unanswered questions about both the alleged attacks and the events leading to the suspect’s death in custody.
