Nigerian music stars, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide, and Damini Ogulu, professionally called Burna Boy, have been placed firmly in the global spotlight after their songs were named on Barack Obama’s 2025 Favourite Music List.
The former United States president released his annual list of favourite books, films and music as 2025 drew to a close, continuing a tradition that began during his time in the White House.
Among the diverse and international selection were 99 by Olamide and Tatata by Burna Boy featuring American rapper Travis Scott, marking a strong showing for Nigerian music on one of the world’s most closely watched cultural playlists.
Olamide, widely regarded as both a rapper and hip hop musician, earned his spot with 99, a song praised for its street-rooted storytelling and contemporary sound.
The inclusion further reinforces his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most influential music figures and a key architect of modern indigenous hip hop.
Burna Boy’s Tatata, meanwhile, stood out as another African highlight on the list.
The collaboration underscores Burna Boy’s sustained global appeal and his ability to bridge Afrobeats with international hip hop audiences, a feat that has defined much of his recent success.
Obama’s 2025 playlist also features songs by artists such as Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Olivia Dean, BLACKPINK, Rosalía and Bruce Springsteen, reflecting a wide range of genres and cultures.
However, the presence of both Olamide and Burna Boy has drawn particular attention in Nigeria, where fans have celebrated the moment as further proof of the country’s growing cultural influence worldwide.
For many observers, the recognition is a feel good milestone, not just for the two artists, but for the Nigerian music industry as a whole, highlighting how local sounds continue to travel far beyond the country’s borders and resonate on the global stage.
