The police in Ogun have uncovered fresh evidence linking two suspects arrested in Ijebu-Ode to a kidnapping and murder case in neighbouring Edo State, deepening an investigation that has now exposed an alleged interstate criminal syndicate.
The suspects, identified as 25-year-old Gafaru Adamu and 20-year-old Muhammed Sanni, were initially nabbed by personnel of the Nigeria Forest Security Service in the Atiba area of Ijebu-Ode and handed over to the police for investigation.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command said intelligence-driven investigations conducted by operatives of its Anti-Kidnapping Unit revealed that the duo are wanted in connection with a kidnapping and murder case reported in the Okada area of Edo State.
According to the police, preliminary findings indicate that the suspects are members of a seven-man kidnapping syndicate allegedly involved in the abduction and murder of two hostages in Edo State.
The statement disclosed that further investigation led to the recovery of a pair of police camouflage uniform and three mobile phones from the suspects.
“The exhibits have been properly documented and taken into custody to aid further investigation,” the command stated.
The police noted that the alleged crimes under investigation were committed outside Ogun State and, in line with established inter-state policing procedures, the suspects and recovered exhibits would be transferred to the Edo State Police Command, which has primary jurisdiction over the case.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the professionalism and intelligence-gathering efforts of the operatives whose investigation led to the identification of the suspects and the recovery of critical exhibits.
Ojajuni reiterated the command’s determination to prevent criminals from using Ogun State as a safe haven or transit point for unlawful activities.
He assured residents that the police would continue to deploy intelligence-led operations, proactive policing strategies and inter-state collaboration to strengthen security across the state.
The commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies in the fight against crime.
