The police in Ogun have held a woman who allegedly attempted to drown her child in a river at about 5pm yesterday.

According to a statement from Ogun State police spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the 30-year-old woman identified as Oluwabunmi Ajayi has been held for attempted murder after she was sighted dumping her baby in the river.

Odutola stated that the 5-month-old child identified as Imole Anifowose was rescued by a passer-by who witnessed the crime and reported to the police, who moved swiftly and arrested the mother.

Celebrating the rescue efforts as heroic, Odutola stated that the child is now in stable condition “after one Olusola Sonaya of RSS River Sagamu, averted a premeditated drowning by the mother”.

She added, “The person who saw her dropping the child into the river raced to the river and rescued the baby from drowning.

“The baby was rushed to OOUTH for immediate medical attention, and examination, and was reported to have survived the trauma.

“The mother has been apprehended and currently under observation to ascertain her mental health. Effort has been made to contact relatives or the husband to hand over the baby in the hospital, for appropriate welfare.”
