The Ogun State Government has stepped up efforts to enforce environmental sanitation laws, with the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) entering into a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Command, to tackle indiscriminate waste disposal across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Hon. Farok Adeniyi Akintunde, disclosed this following a high-level meeting with the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, at the Command Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Akintunde explained that the collaboration is designed to strengthen compliance with existing waste management regulations, particularly in curbing the persistent practice of dumping refuse on roadsides, medians, and other public spaces.
He noted that the initiative builds on the existing synergy between OGWAMA and the police, while positioning both institutions to more effectively deliver on their shared mandate of ensuring a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for residents.

Responding, CP Ojajuni reaffirmed the Command’s readiness to support OGWAMA’s enforcement drive across the state. He assured that police operatives would back the agency in ensuring strict adherence to the Ogun State Environmental and Waste Management Laws.

The Commissioner also issued a warning to residents against obstructing OGWAMA officials in the course of their duties, stressing that violators would face the full weight of the law.

Beyond enforcement, Ojajuni underscored the importance of sustained public enlightenment, urging OGWAMA to deepen advocacy through collaboration with non-governmental organisations, schools, and community groups.

He further recommended the introduction of special waste marshals to drive grassroots sensitisation, promote responsible waste disposal habits, and encourage residents to patronise approved Private Sector Participants for waste collection.
