The Corps Commander of Amotekun in Ogun State, Brig. Gen. A.I. Adedigba (rtd), has dismissed a report by online news platform Sahara Reporters as baseless and misleading, stating that the security outfit is well-funded by the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Adedigba described the report, which alleged that Amotekun was underfunded, as “pure fiction” and lacking substance. He emphasized that since its inception in 2020, the Ogun State government has remained committed to providing the necessary resources for the outfit’s efficiency and effectiveness.
“Governor Abiodun was among the first to inaugurate and empower Amotekun. He has prioritized security by providing 10 brand-new Toyota Hilux patrol vehicles and ensuring robust funding and logistical support,” he said.
The Commander further countered the report’s claim that only ₦103 million was allocated to the agency in 2024, clarifying that the actual budget stood at ₦731,770,793.53. He also disclosed that for 2025, the Ogun State House of Assembly has approved a significant budget increase to ₦1.5 billion.
Adedigba criticized the report’s claims as misleading, stating that the administration had invested heavily in Amotekun’s infrastructure, personnel, and operational logistics.
“It is unfortunate that the report failed to acknowledge our move to a newly constructed and well-furnished state headquarters this year,” he said. “The claim that only ₦10 million was spent on services is false, as our monthly operational costs include vehicle maintenance, office supplies, and other essential resources.”
He highlighted key government investments, including:
- Renovation of the old secretariat office complex, with a new borehole for water supply.
- Recruitment and training of 750 new operatives in 2024, with salaries approved from their training days.
- Procurement of additional operational vehicles and power bikes, bringing the agency’s fleet to over 45 serviceable vehicles and 70 motorcycles.
- Approval for another 500 personnel, with full uniforms and salary backing.
“How can a government that neglects security invest so much in Amotekun?” he said.
Adedigba reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and urged the public to rely on official sources rather than sensationalist reports.
“Ogun State remains steadfast in ensuring security, fostering intelligence-sharing, and strengthening collaboration with other security agencies. The budget allocations and spending details are public records, available for verification,” he added.
