Officers Not Authorised to Demand Customs Papers, Tinted Glass Permit from Motorists —Police

Pat Stevens/

Police authorities have reiterated the fact that officers are not authorised to demand customs papers and tinted glass permit from motorists.

Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police, made this known in a tweet today.

Adejobi said police officers could demand customs papers from motorists only when they are on a joint patrol with officers of the Nigerian Customs Service.

H said police officers have also been ordered to stop asking motorists for tinted glass permit since the authorities suspended the issuance of the permit last year.

Adejobi tweeted, “No policeman should demand your customs papers. No. Except they are on joint operation, but not just on mere routine checks. And for now, we have suspended issuance of tinted glass permit, so we don’t expect our men to disturb Nigerians on this.

“We are to stop any vehicle with tints, search the vehicle and its occupants, but not to delay them for not having tinted glass permits. Report them if you are so delayed so that we ask them questions.”

On the documents motorists are required to carry with them, Adejobi wrote in a separate tweet, “Please take note that the police don’t demand for allocation of number paper. Its not necessary, since a vehicle has been registered. All you need to have with you is the three I mentioned: vehicle licence, certificate of insurance and drivers licence. Simple.”
