Sixteen days after she died following years of alleged sexual molestation, Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje has been laid to rest today at her Ogene-Amejo Village, at Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue State.
News of what the late 13-year-old girl allegedly suffered in the hands of a guardian and his son had drawn public outrage as calls were made to the police to see that justice is done.
Ochanya, from the age of eight, was allegedly sexually abused for four years by Mr Andrew Ogbuja, a lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo and his son, Victor Ogbuja, a student of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, also in Benue.
Launching a campaign on her Facebook page, Josephine Effah-Chukwuma, the Executive Director at Project Alert on Violence against Women, stated: “The assignment we have now is #JusticeforOchanya.”
She called on the police to also question the suspect’s wife, Mrs Felicia Ogbuja, who is a cousin to Ochanya’s father, Mr Michael Ogbanje.
She accused the woman of being “an accessory to the fact of a murder” because the serial abuse was allegedly perpetrated while the girl was under her care.
