Obasanjo Advocates Education without Borders in Nigeria

By Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu/
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is seeking education without border in Nigeria’s education system to give Nigerians attending foreign schools equal opportunities as their Nigerian trained counterparts.
He made the call following the intervention sought by the management of Houdegbe North American University, Benin Republic, over the suspension of admission into the school’s Faculty of Law programme by the National Universities Commission, the Nigeria Law School, and the Council for Legal Education.
Led by the Chancellor-President, Professor Octave Cossi Houdegbe, the team is seeking a reverse of the suspension, which has allegedly impacted negatively on the young Nigerians studying Law at the university.
Houdegbe, in a letter signed by him said all moves by the university authority towards rescinding the suspension of the Law programme met a brick wall.
He said, “The suspension constituted a tragic and unexpected crisis which has claimed a high toll on the moral, psychological affective life on young Nigerian boys and girls as it has stalled their individual plans for a self emancipating future
“Hence, extending my apology to the distinguished members and authorities of the Law School, Abuja, I feel highly honoured to plead that the Council of Legal Education and the National Universities Commission accept to forgive Houdegbe North American University and its Law Faculty by lifting the suspension of admission of the graduates of this university to the Law School, in Abuja.”
Responding, Obasanjo promised to discuss the matter with the regulatory bodies if all means of cracking the hard nut had been exhausted.
He said, “If at the end of  seeing this process through and there is any further complaint, I will appreciate your bringing it to my notice, so that I can take it up with any of the authorities, the NUC, The Law School and Council of Legal Education or even the three of them at the same time.”
Earlier, Obasanjo commended the school management for the move taken so far towards ensuring amicable resolution of the matter. He added that the move by the university would further strengthen good brotherliness among the ECOWAS community.
