Borno State has recorded its first COVID-19 death, just as a doctor at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has tested positive for the virus.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the deceased was a retired anaesthetic nurse who worked in Pulka, Gwoza local government area of the state.

His son is also said to be in critical condition but his COVID-19 status is yet to be confirmed.

The patient was reportedly admitted at UMTH for abdominal pains, but his condition deteriorated rapidly yesterday night and he died within a few hours.

The deceased was also said to have developed respiratory issues just before he died, prompting a last-minute decision to test him for COVID-19.

Contact tracing has reportedly begun amidst fears that the deceased might have infected other health workers having lived at the Umaru Shehu Ultra-modern Hospital (USUMH) staff quarters.
