Dangote refinery fuel pricing

The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its nationwide strike following a breakthrough agreement with Dangote Refinery, the union confirmed today.

NUPENG President, Williams Akporeha, announced the development in a phone call, stating: “We have suspended the strike. The Dangote refinery has agreed to unionise its drivers. We signed an agreement.”

The strike, which began yesterday, had escalated labour tensions and raised fears of fuel shortages nationwide, as operations at depots including Lagos, Warri, Port Harcourt, and Delta State were temporarily crippled.

This resolution emerged from a high-level meeting convened by the Department of State Services (DSS) and attended by the Minister of Labour, representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Dangote management, and other stakeholders.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed stipulates that Dangote management acknowledged unionisation as a worker’s right and pledged to implement the policy promptly.

The process of unionisation is expected to be completed between September 9 and 22, 2025, with protections in place to ensure no worker faces victimisation for supporting it.

This settlement effectively averts immediate concerns of fuel scarcity as fuel distribution operations begin to normalise across the country.
