To mark this year’s World Day for Safety and Health at the Workplace, Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), Ibadan region planted a tree as it urged employers of labour to make the workplace safe and healthy for employees.

The Regional Manager Ibadan, Mrs. Toyin Emeordi, after planting the tree at their Ringroad Ibadan office to kickstart this year’s event narrated that the promotion of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is being handled by the Health Safety and Environment (HSE) team taking up sensitization and OSH inspection and audit checks on organizations across the Southwest zone to limit accidents and diseases.

“This is the first step of compensation to employees,” she said.

The Regional Head of HSE, Mr. Gbenga Oso, said, “The exercise is to show our readiness to partner with the global world agenda in eliminating carbon dioxide, CO2, from the atmosphere the natural way by planting of trees to reduce carbon and global warming in line with the Paris agreement of COP21 (Conference of Parties) to decarbonize and reduce emissions.”

At the presentation held at the regional office conference room in Ibadan, on May 2, employers of labour were invited to sensitize them on the various impacts of climate change on their employees and more importantly the mitigation strategy to reduce the risks involved.

The Ibadan branch head of HSE, Mr. Sunday Olowookere, made the presentation. Other speakers included heads of compliance, claims and compensation, inspection, and SERVICOM. They spoke extensively on the Employee’s Compensation Scheme (ECS) on various impacts and effects of climate change.

World Day for Safety and Health is a day set aside by the world body – the International Labour Organisation (ILO), to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.

It is an awareness-raising event to draw the world’s attention to critical work and safety issues.
